Storm and Shadow: Part 1

Kazrec Stormclaw sat in his private quarters. It was a modest living space for the Centurion, located in the Ash Legion barracks in Hero’s Canton. The Centurion was known for his dedicated work ethic, evidenced further by his bunk’s close proximity to his desk. There were several secure cabinets along the wall next to his desk, which Kazrec used to store official documents.

He was spending the afternoon reviewing the latest series of reports from his warband. As he was reading Renzor’s latest psych report on Fangos Goldwrath, a courier arrived with an important letter addressed to him. Kazrec had taken the letter and waved the courier away impatiently, tossing it aside on his stack of papers to be read. However, as he did this, Kazrec noticed the seal on the envelope, an ornate red “A” embellished with gold highlights; The trademark symbol of the Atmos family.

The Centurion’s Resolution

Set shortly after his brawl with the Inquest researcher Mikkah, Kazrec Stormclaw has been rendered unconscious during his battle with the wily necromancer, now he wakes up in the nearby hospital:

Kazrec Stormclaw stared down in amazement at the singed and burning remains of the training dummy set out before him. His teacher, Vartik Thunderpaw had instructed him to focus his elemental power until the last moment that his punches connected. “This way,” Vartik had said with a fierce grin, “The full force of your elemental power will be inflicted upon the enemy.” Kazrec had nodded and watched as his master demonstrated the technique to him. Vartik took a deep breath and focused his energy, then he leapt forward on a gust on wind and unleashed a flurry of punches on the training dummy. His barrage of punches had torn the dummy to shreds in seconds.

Kazrec had watched wide-eyed as explosions of flame blossomed and burst from his master’s fists. Vartik stepped back from the ruined dummy, a satisfied smile on his face, and pointed to the next one in the line. “Now, you try. Give it your best shot. Remember, focus your power and hold it. Release it as your strikes connect.” The master elementalist waved at his pupil to start. Kazrec got up from the ground and stood in front of the dummy. Taking a deep breath as his master did, he focused his energy…

Kazrec awoke from his dream with a start. He was lying in a hospital bed, his friends were off elsewhere, “Finishing the matches, no doubt,” he thought to himself.. He stood up slowly, wincing at the soreness in his body. The last thing he remembered was the dark magic of that Asuran necromancer consuming him. It was only a sparring match, so it seemed like he wasn’t permanently injured…but effects of the magic had left him sore all over.

The centurion’s thoughts shifted back to his dream, “An old memory…” he mused. Then he felt a sudden pang of anger and shame. “What a pitiful fight that was,” he grumbled to himself. “I didn’t even manage to lay a finger on that runt. Master Thunderpaw would have been livid if he saw that foolish display I put on.” He propped himself up on his bed and stretched, growling slightly as his joints ached in protest. “I’m glad Tribune Desertgrave wasn’t there either. She would have demoted me for sure.” he thought ruefully.

Kazrec sat on the side of the bed, brows furrowed in thought. “How can I train Rosalia, when I myself lack the skill to handle even one opponent?” he thought bitterly. He sat for a while, stewing in embarrassment and prideful anger. “I have to get stronger, hone my skills further…I will not lose again!” Kazrec clenched his fists and stood up from the bed, his mind was made up. “There isn’t any time to lose!” His eyes flashed with a fierce determination. “To the Mist War then! I will sharpen my skills in the eternal crucible of war!”

Kazrec made his way out of the hospital and began walking toward the upper city, where the Asura gate to Lion’s Arch was located. “I’ll have to leave instructions with Renzor before I leave…” He stopped for a moment and gazed back toward the alley where Rosalia and her friends were no doubt finishing their sparring match. “Rosa,” his gaze softened momentarily. “I’m sorry, but your training will just have to wait…” The centurion turned and continued on his way. There was work to be done.

Kazrec: "The Zephyr Sanctum was quite a wondrous place. I’ll never forget the view from the top. It felt like one could see all of Tyria, sitting up there. Normally, I would have been uncomfortable from the height, but sitting up there with Elemental Atmos…it was quite peaceful…."

The Eternal Flames

Kazrec stepped up to the Mystic Forge, his body tense from excitement. After all his hard work and sacrifice, it was finally time! He would finally claim his ultimate weapon. He raised his voice and called out, “Zommoros! I, Kazrec Stormclaw, summon you!”

The mystic forge frothed with arcane energies and swirled with multi-colored light. There was a pause, then a booming voice echoed forth, “Speak, Charr, what do you seek?”

Kazrec spread his arms wide, “I seek the eternal flames of the Incinerator.”

Zommoros was silent for a moment, “Another mortal who seeks the Eternal Flame…Tell me, Charr, have you proof of your worthiness?”

Kazrec nodded. “I do.” He drew forth a golden mug, frothing forth with a mystical brew. “I have fought and honed my skills in countless battles. I have traveled the four corners of Tyria, from the darkest depths to the highest peaks. The proof of my mastery, all my experience and perseverance, I hereby present to you.”

Kazrec tossed the Gift of Mastery into the Forge. It stopped midflight and hung in the air above the Forge’s twisting depths, suspended by an unknown power.

Kazrec then took out a weathered stone from his pocket. It lit the area with a soft green light, humming quietly with power. “I have sought my fortune, setting out across the world. Every good turn, every lucky day, every smile that Fate gave me. It is here, in this stone. A testament to the good fortune I have been blessed with.”

Kazrec threw the Gift of Fortune into the Forge as well. It sailed a few inches before it too joined the Gift of Mastery in mid-air.

The Mystic Forge rumbled as Zommoros spoke once more. “You have indeed proven your mastery and fortune, Charr. But there is yet more you require. Fortune and Mastery prove your worth, but now the weapon needs to be given form and have life breathed into it.”

Kazrec smiled, “I know. I have it here, Zommoros.” Kazrec then took out a golden idol in the shape of a flaming dagger. “Here is the material that will give Incinerator form. Metal and Flame joined together in perfect harmony, infused with the power of many runestones.”

image

He tossed this into the Mystic Forge as well and it hovered in mid-air. As the Gift of Incinerator hovered, the Gifts of Fortune and Mastery began to circle slowly around it, humming softly.

Kazrec then pulled out a golden dagger, with a curved crossguard and a blade like a spike. “Here is the spark to start the flame. A Spark to ignite the world in everlasting fire. Now it will give life to Incinerator!”

image

Kazrec held out Spark toward the Mystic Forge. An invisible force picked it up from his hands and pulled it into the center of the Forge. The arcane ebbing of the Forge began to swirl faster and faster as Zommoros spoke, “Then I present to you the Incinerator, the eternal flames of passion and fury. Wield it well, Kazrec Stormclaw.”

The Gifts of Mastery and Fortune became shining lights; their essence ripped apart by Zommoros and then infused into the floating Spark. Then the Gift of Incinerator began to fuse with Spark, melding together into one weapon. The dragon’s head-shaped hilt gradually took shape; its eyes alight with inner flame.

Once the weapon was finished, it floated forward and Kazrec caught it. Eyes bright with excitement, he gave it a deft twirl and ignited the weapon. Spinning around, he swung and jabbed at invisible enemies, testing its weight and speed.

With a final flourishing strike, Kazrec let loose a blast of fire into the air, much to the surprise of the people in the plaza. Grinning with triumph, Kazrec announced to the crowd, “The Incinerator is mine!”

Kazrec: “Knut Whitebear held a moot to celebrate the defeat of the Molten Alliance. I met up with Elemental Atmos and together with our friends, we celebrated our victory. Victories and feasting aside, I was just happy to spend time with him again…”

Kazrec: “After all that nasty business with the Molten Alliance it was nice to kick back and relax for a bit on the beach. Despite the jacked up prices, the Consortium have managed to put up a decent beach resort here….I should bring Elemental Atmos here…the stars are so beautiful at night…

Kazrec: “I never thought I would find someone as amazing as Elemental Atmos…but with him by my side, I know that there is nothing we can’t accomplish. Now more than ever, I am determined to defeat the Elder Dragons and save Tyria.”

Kazrec: “Apparently, the fellow had a thing for Charr. Normally, I don’t mind the attention…but he was a little odd. So I asked him nicely to step back. But when he didn’t budge, I gave him a “light” jolt of static and sent him packing. Hopefully that will teach him a lesson about invading a Charr’s personal space without permission.”
